Introduction India’s sugar production for the 2024-25 sugar marketing season (October 2024 - September 2025) remains at a comfortable level, ensuring sufficient supply for domestic consumption. According to the Indian Sugar and Bio Energy Manufacturers Association (ISMA), the country has approximately 280 lakh tonnes of sugar, eliminating concerns over a possible shortage.

Current Sugar Consumption Trends

Between October 2024 and January 2025, India’s domestic sugar consumption stood at 91.6 lakh tonnes, compared to the domestic sales quota of 92 lakh tonnes.

The average monthly sugar consumption is 22.8 lakh tonnes, but this is expected to rise to 23.5 lakh tonnes per month during the summer and festival season.

Despite fluctuations in demand, sugar mills continue operations, ensuring uninterrupted supply.

State-Wise Sugar Production Outlook

1. Uttar Pradesh

38% of sugar mills are still in operation, and crushing will continue till April 2025.

This extended crushing season ensures a steady sugar supply for upcoming months.

2. Maharashtra and Karnataka

Favorable weather conditions have led to increased sugarcane planting.

The higher cane yield in these states boosts expectations for timely crushing in the 2025-26 sugar marketing season.

Impact on Domestic Market and Sugar Prices

Sufficient sugar availability is expected to stabilize sugar prices, preventing inflationary pressure on consumers.

Increased production in key states reduces dependency on sugar imports, supporting the domestic economy.

Future Outlook for Sugar Industry

Ethanol Production Boost:

The sugar industry is also expected to contribute to ethanol production, supporting India’s bio-energy sector.

The government’s push for ethanol blending with petrol is set to benefit the sugar industry financially.

Improved Cane Crop Yields:

The favorable monsoon and increased cane planting in 2025 indicate a strong start for the next sugar season.

Government Policies and Subsidies:

Policy support for sugar mills and minimum support prices (MSP) for sugarcane will further strengthen production stability.

Conclusion

With ample sugar stock, steady production in key states, and government support for ethanol and bio-energy, India's sugar industry remains strong and resilient. Consumers can expect stable sugar prices, ensuring a smooth supply throughout the festival and summer seasons.
